It has been a busy month for the Red Hook Community Justice Center!
The department of Youth & Community programs hosted our 9th Annual Young Adult Internship and Opportunity Fair in partnership with Good Shepherd Services on 4/17. Young people between the ages of 14-24 throughout Brooklyn, and other parts of NYC had to the chance to apply for paid and unpaid summer programming opportunities at the Justice Center, other local businesses and community based organizations. Some organizations who tabled at the event included Exalt, Red Hook Initiative and Green City Force.
On Friday April 20, The Neighborhood Restitution Crew partnered with Red Hook Community Justice Center staff, MAP(Mayor’s Action Plan) , MOCJ (Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice), 76th Precinct Neighborhood Coordination Officers, PSA1 officers and TASC Students, for an Earth day project. We painted over a graffiti covered fence. It was a day to show our community we care. We thank everyone who came out to lend a helping hand. The day was a huge success!
In addition, we also celebrated our 3rd annual “Earth Day Event”. Children from the Miccio Community Center joined in for an afternoon of the Red Hook Community joined the celebration. The afternoon consisted of arts and crafts activities, face painting pot décor and flower planting. This year we also introduced Toy Swap! In the spirit of recycling, children had the opportunity to take home lightly used toys with them
The Red Hook Community Justice Center staff and community members celebrated #DenimDay on 4/24 with Red Hook CARES! Everyone was asked to wear denim in order to to Stand in Solidarity with Sexual Assault Survivors and also created signs. Together everyone then took the Ferry Ride to Manhattan to rally alongside survivors and advocates from all over NYC. There were well over 150 people at the rally, and they heard from sexual assault victims and survivors, elected officials, and leaders of community organizations from across the city. It means a lot that those individuals spoke out about their experiences and the support they received from everyone was incredible. Everyone looked fabulous in their denim, the signs were wonderful, and it was a great time.
